Exiles Defense Proves Spartan for Essex

Kent Exiles 41 - 0 Essex Spartans

31-05-2005

The Exiles kicked off their first home game of the season against their closest rivals so far in division 2 south east, and destroyed the Spartans to solidify their position at the top of the table.

The first quarter saw the Exiles put up 21 unanswered points and effectively seal the victory, Stewart Muir scored the first points on a 32-yard run to cap a fine weekend for him, as he had played for Great Britain the day before. Garry Dillon then scored from 5-yards out, against his former team, and Grahame Warby snared the first of his three touchdowns from Mat Duncan from 15-yards out. Mat Tompsett hit all three point afters for the 21-0 score.

Meanwhile the Exiles defence were also in a dominant mood. Ex-Sundevil Kerry Grey recorded 2 sacks whilst Gary Ead and Scott Lawrence both recorded 1 and a half each, for Ead it meant him breaking the record of most sacks in a season for the club with 6 and a half so far this season.

The second quarter saw the Exiles put the game away further when Michael Turner returned a Spartan punt 66 yards for a touchdown, the first in the Exiles 15 year history. Tompsett again hit the extra point. Grahame Warby then rounded off his day by catching touchdowns of 1 and 45 yards from Duncan; Tompsett added a further extra point for the final 41-0 scoreline.

For most of the second half the Exiles again gave the rest of the squad valuable playing time, and despite not troubling the scoreboard (albeit with two botched field goal attempts) the defence still held the Spartans to paltry gains.

Following the victory Head Coach Phil Wood commented "5-0 feels good to be at, but the team are aware that it is still only the half way point in the season and a lot can happen. Some more guys came good today and stepped up their games, the competition for starting places is now becoming fierce".

The Exiles now have a few weeks layoff, but are focusing on the next challenge of the Norwich Devils. Full details of the club can be found on the website www.kentexiles.co.uk
