Unbeaten Exiles Demolish Devils

Kent Exiles 43-6 Norwich Devils

27-06-2005

The Kent Exiles consolidated top place in the BAFL South Eastern division with a crushing defeat of the Norwich Devils by 43 points to 6.

The undoubted star of the show was Exiles quarterback Matt Duncan, who threw for 286 yards and 6 touchdowns on the day, both club records, and also earned the accolade of being voted BAFL player of the week. The Exiles took an early 7-0 lead on a Duncan 34-yard pass to Grahame Warby, with Matt Tompsett booting the extra point. Then the Exiles defence stepped in on their own record setting mission, and gave the Norwich quarterback a ‘Devil’ of a day on their way to recording 8 sacks. Scott Lawrence led the team with 3, and in doing so passed Gary Ead in the race to lead the Exiles on the season by ½ a sack with 7 so far.

The Exiles next drive was capped when Anthony Richards caught his second pass, and second touchdown, of the season on a 20-yard strike from Duncan; Tompsett was again good for the 14-0 lead. The Devils then got themselves right back in it though when Ben Green brilliantly returned the ensuing kick-off 82 yards, only the third touchdown conceded by the Exiles this season, behind some strong blocking.

Lawrence again proved his worth by blocking the point after attempt, and the Exiles led 14-6. Undeterred by this, the Exiles offence set out where they had left off and drove down the field behind elusive running from GB International Stewart Muir, and catches from Alan Hands, to set up Steve Garwood to score from 11 yards out, and a 20-6 lead.

The Exiles defence, led by Aaron Alexis’ 16 tackles and 2 sacks, continued to hold the Devils, and the half ended after Richards second touchdown of the day, this time a 68 yard bomb from Duncan. Tompsett slotted the point for a 27-6 lead at the half time interval.

The second half continued in exactly the same manner, when Duncan found Warby, this time from 78 yards, for their second hook-up of the day, and the Exiles were looking out of sight with a 34-6 lead. As is now becoming customary, the Exiles gave the majority of the second half to their less experienced players, and extended their lead with a Tompsett field goal from 18 yards out following some great bursts from Xavier Heckel through the gut of the Devils defence.

On the other side of the ball Adrian Scorey, Stuart Collings and Chris Stenson all chipped in with their first sacks of the season to contribute to the record setting day. Scott Shephard then recorded his first career catch, and touchdown, from 16 yards out to complete the scoring, and Duncan’s record setting day was rounded out.

Following the game the Exiles were in buoyant mood, but heeded a warning from Head Coach Phil Wood who said, “six wins is a great start to the season, but we need to keep our focus and not get complacent. We have four games left to ensure we qualify for the play-offs, and three are against the Maidstone Pumas who recorded their first win today. We can’t let their poor record fool us though, they have improved immeasurably this season already, and with local derbies the formbook goes out of the window. I‘m sure they are remembering the 3-0 defeat they gave us in 2003 to record their only win when we were on the way into the play-offs then”.

The Exiles have a week off before facing the Pumas in their first clash away in Rochester, but the football is continuing in Kent this weekend when the Exiles youth squad take on the Milton Keynes Pathfinders on Sunday. Kick-off is a 2pm in Orpington, and admission is free. Full details can be found on the Exiles website, www.kentexiles.co.uk
