Exiles beat Renegades in first taste of action.

As expected, the newly promoted Exiles proved too strong for newcomers Reading, and in the first half scored 33 points while holding the home team scoreless. Fielding a balanced attack which on the day put up 189 yards passing and 173 yards rushing, the visitors used 7 different runners on the ground whilst in the air QB Joel Grundy spread the ball to 6 different receivers. The experienced Kent team gave a lot of time to rookies including RB Dan Smith who rushed for 2 TDs, and O-lineman Jerry Hughes, both graduating from the Exiles youth set-up Reading received the kick-off but lost a fumble on their very first play, giving the Exiles’ high-powered offence good field position. The visitors wasted no time in capitalising - 4 plays later Grundy threw 25-yard strike to TE Steve Garwood for the game’s first score. The Renegades’ fledgling offence was unable to make much headway against the Kent defence, with Dave “Rocko” Maisey and Kerry Gray having standout performances on the D-line. Their pressure paid off as both registered sacks, and O-lineman Steven Johnson added 2 of his own whilst on loan to the Defence. WR-turned-CB Alex Campbell and LB Paul Samartin made 5 tackles as Kent forced the Renegades into a series of first half 3-and-outs. On the other side of the ball the Exiles racked up the points – Sean Starwind running a 46 yard TD off a reverse, and RB Xavier Heckel driving up the middle for another score after a long catch and run by Grahame Warby. In the second quarter, backed up inside their own five yard line, Grundy hit Starwind - a recent NFLE trialist - for 81 yards and a TD on his way to a career high 175 yards passing. RB Glen Boyle also got in on the action, taking a screen pass deep into Renegades territory, and following it later with a razzle-dazzle punt return picked out of the air and returned 40 yards. Following strong rushing from Lee Nash and Garry Dillon, Smith powered home for the first of his scores before the half, behind a dominant O-line who opened big holes for all 5 running backs. In the second half the Renegades were initially able to move the ball better, putting together a long drive in the third quarter and capping it off with a TD through the air to James Smith, the first in Renegades history! For the Exiles, Anthony Richards was unlucky not to score after taking a tumble on the 2yard line whilst in the clear, and Mark Evans later took a WR screen pass down into the Renegades’ redzone to set up Smith’s second score and the last of the night. The Exiles used the second half to rotate in players at every position, and QB Jonathan Weller was unfortunate to have a TD pass called back on a penalty. The Defence kept up the pressure on the Renegades throughout, and defensive tackle Maisey recovered a fumble on the last play of the game which he ran all the way back to the 1 yard line as time expired. The Exiles ran out winners of a game played in good spirit, with Kent happy to help the Renegades in their petition for BAFL membership. They did themselves proud overall, with several of their rookie players stepping up into game action for the first time, and learning a lot from the experience. Whilst overall showing a lot of potential, and a desire to learn and improve, qualities which will stand them in good stead for the future. They also provided some excellent post match entertainment! The Renegades are looking for more players and staff to get involved before they kick off their league action, and are asking anyone who is interested in getting involved to contact the team via their website www.renegadesafc.com. The Exiles will also put any interested parties in touch with the Renegades via their website www.kentexiles.co.uk Selected Exiles Game Statistics Passing J.Grundy: 8 from 14,175 yds, 0 int, 2TD J.Weller: 1 from 3,14yds Rushing- D.
