Exiles Win In Defensive Battle - Chiltern Cheetahs 0-6 Kent Exiles

Both defences had the upper hand in the early encounters, as the slick ball hampered any passing, and the mud underfoot slowed the running game, allowing Aaron Alexis to start recording the first of his 14 tackles on the day on the way to earning a BAFL player of the week nomination. Late on in the first quarter though Exiles quarterback Matt Duncan found speedy wideout Sean Starwind on the sideline, and one broken tackle later he was in the endzone after an 80 yard sprint to give the Exiles what were to be the only points of the game. Paul Samartin and Mark Vickers then led the Exiles defence for the rest of the game, both also recording over 10 tackles each, and shutting down the Cheetahs offence to grind out the victory. After the game Coach Mitchell commented “It was an ugly win, but we’ll certainly take it! The conditions affected both sides, but I’m proud of the way we handled ourselves, especially on defence today. Playing Bristol next week will be another test for us, but so far we are relishing the experience of playing at a higher level” The Exiles now take on last seasons Division 1a winners, the Bristol Aztecs, next Sunday at home. The game is kicking off at around 3pm, as beforehand the Exiles undefeated youth team will be taking on the Essex Spartans, kicking off at 12 noon.
