Exiles Win Means Gladiators Hit League Bottom

Kent Exiles 27-0 Colchester Gladiators

The Exiles defence was in fine form

The Kent Exiles finally showed some of the football they are capable of this season with a resounding 27-0 victory over the Colchester Gladiators. The win moves the Exiles off the bottom of the table, and puts the Gladiators there in their place.

It was a cautious start to the game for the Exiles offence, with drives getting started, but then faltering before having any real chances of scoring. Meanwhile the Exiles defence was putting its mark on the game with some hard hitting, particularly from linebacker Randol Smith, and an interception from Steve Collison.

The Exiles offence then exploded in the second quarter. Stewart Muir was the fist to score on a 3 yard burst, following a short drive, and Scott Shephard kicked the first of his three extra points on the day Mark Evans then picked off Gladiators quarterback Rob Turner, and another short drive was culminated by Paul Crawford’s one yard plunge over the line for his first Exiles score, Shephard kicked the extra point.

Martin Jefkins on his way to the endzone

Exiles quarterback Damian Marshall was then forced off with an ankle injury, but the offence didn’t miss a beat with Joel Grundy under centre, a couple of good runs from Muir and a pass from Grundy to Martin Jefkins set up the third score. This time it was the ageless Jefkins who took the handoff and cutback to find the seam in the Gladiators defence, a broken tackle later and he was in the endzone after an amazing 35 yard scamper.

Another great defensive stand saw the Exiles take the ball with less than a minute on the clock, and that man Grundy was determined to make the most of his chance, further extending the Exiles lead with a pinpoint pass to Darren Durup who made the fingertip grab in stride to outpace the Gladiators secondary on a 40 yard score. Shephard was again accurate with the point after.

27-0 up at the half and with the defence in fine form, the Exiles took the chance in the second half to work on some different formations and problems that had plagued the team in their opening games.

Then in the fourth quarter they emptied the bench to give their whole squad a good run out, and gain some valuable experience in what is sure to be a hard second half of the season. Head Coach Craig Ramsay was pleased following his teams performance, “we played well, and more importantly gave ourselves a cushion to ensure we could work on some things. Coach Hadley’s defence was great today, forcing 5 turnovers and getting the shutout. We now need to take this momentum into the re-match with the Saints next week here at Crockenhill.”
