Opening Day Defeat Hands Cardinals Victory

Kent Exiles 2-20 Ipswich Cardinals

Aaron Alexis and Mark Vickers make another tackle

The Kent Exiles Crashed to an opening day defeat at home against the Ipswich Cardinals after their offence failed to find it's feet in a bruising encounter.

The game was preceded by a minutes silence for a friend of the Exiles, Oxford Saints General Manager Roger Hedges, who passed away the previous week, and it was impeccably honoured by both teams and the large crowd of over 150 supporters who had come to watch the match.

The Cardinals had a point to prove after their drubbing at the hands of the Exiles last season, and with the Exiles ex-Head Coach James Mitchell now standing on their sideline they set about proving it from the onset with some tenacious tackling.

It was to be the Cardinals relationship with their local United States Air Force bases which to prove the ultimate difference in the game, and this was proved when in the first quarter quarterback Chris Jackson found Byron Washington from 36 yards out, Adam Van der Zanden kicked the PAT.

It was to be this trio who again put seven points on the board in the 2nd quarter, this time from 10 yards out, following an interception of Exiles quarterback Joel Grundy, again by Washington.

The third quarter saw the Exiles virtually committ suicide, as 45 yards of penalties gave the Cardinals a third score as Paul Borstel punched in from 2 yards out.

It was here the Exiles finally got on the board as Scott Lawrence blocked the Cardinals PAT attempt, and Pat Turner scooped up the loose ball and sprinted 71 yards for the 2 point conversion.

The Exiles then put together two more sustained drives, but could not trouble the scoreboard before time ran out and the Cardinals were 20-2 victors.

Following the game Exiles Head Coach Craig Ramsay commented, "we hurt ourselves today with ill discipline and a poor mental attitude, and you just cannot do that against any team at this level, let alone the Cardinals. We now face another tough match against the Farnham Knights next week to see if we can turn that around."
