Exiles Snatch Victory from Chitern's Boot

Kent Exiles 14-13 Chiltern Cheetahs

21-05-2003

Chiltern returned to Kent for the second time in as many weeks, this time to take on the fast improving Kent Exiles. With both teams experiencing their best campaign starts for a few years it was going to be a close, tight contest and that was exactly what it was, with the game not being decided until the last few seconds.

The weather played a major factor in deciding game strategy. With a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch and squally rain, both teams opted for the run for the majority of their plays, with Chiltern using 7 different ball carriers, the pick being Andy Crowther with 95yds and 2 touchdowns. With Chiltern having the lion's share, it wasn't until the last play of the first Qtr. that they took the lead when Andy Crowther ran in from the 1 and Ben Dunmore added the extra point. (7-0)

The 2nd Qtr. saw a reversal with Kent taking control and scoring themselves inside the last 2 minutes of the half when Graham Deacon caught a 22yd pass from Matt Duncan and with Matt Thompsett adding the extra point conversion the teams went to half time tied at 7-7 The 3rd Qtr was stalemate, both teams Defence's rising to the challenge with neither's Offence completing a single pass.

The 4th Qtr. saw Chiltern controlling the ball well against the slope of the pitch both on the ground and in the air and were rewarded when Andy Crowther got his 2nd T.D. of the day, this time from 2yds out. The extra point was missed and Chiltern held a slender 13-7 lead. A good kick off by Chiltern put Kent deep in their own half. Chiltern's Defence were holding Kent and Abdul Lawal thought he had sealed a Cheetah win with an interception returned to Kent's 15yd line, but this was called back on a roughing the passer penalty, giving Kent another opportunity and after a 29yd run and 15yd completion, Matt Duncan found Graham Deacon once more this time from 15yds out, Matt Thompsett tacked on the extra point to lead 14-13.

Chiltern had enough time for one more possession and with 4 quick completion's, 2 each to Conrad Patrick and Spencer Whybrow Chiltern were on Kent's 6yd line. With 4 seconds left in the game Chiltern took their final time out to set themselves up for a game winning field goal. Excellent Defence by Kent saw them block the kick and victory was theirs.
