Chislett Brace Seals First Win Of Season

Kent Exiles 14 - 0 Essex Spartans

Touchdown Exiles!

The Kent Exiles Senior Team got their first win of the season Sunday, dispatching old foes Essex Spartans in a defensive encounter.

Playing their first game at their new home ground of Oxford Road Head Coach Tony Bainbridge had changed some tactics during the week following the two previous losses. From the outset it was obvious the Exiles meant business, as their defence laid the foundations with Jon Dwyer and Adam Pearson seemingly making tackles on every play, whilst the offence moved the ball, but never threatened the endzone.

Unusually the score at half time was 0-0, and the third period carried on in the same fashion, defence again dominated, and for the Exiles Brad McManus, Russell Goodwin and the rest of the defensive line made all the tackles. Finally in the fourth quarter the ball began to move, Quarterback Zac Ritchie found Jon Miller, Nick Thompson and Ennis Alashimi with passes, and Kieron Woolmer ran the ball well to set up Ritchies pass to Colin Chislett for the score from 11 yards out. McManus kicked the extra point, and the Exiles were 7 points up.

With the defence in fine form the Spartans couldn't move the ball, allowing Ritchie and the offence to take over again. This time Wesley Eversley and Miller made the catches, to once again set up a Ritchie pass to Chislett for the second score. McManus again hit the Extra point to make it 14-0 with under 2 minutes remaining. With so little time on the clock the Spartans could not threaten the Exiles, and the game ended on a Joe Beardwell sack of the Spartans Quarterback.

Following the game Exiles Head Coach Tony Bainbridge commented "That was a much better performance, against an always tough opponent. The changes we made worked well, and we had some players step up today, Colin Chislett and Nick Thompson made plenty of catches, Whilst Jon Dwyer was excellent defensively and junior team graduate Seb Pettitt stepped in and barely put a foot wrong. We'll now look to take this momentum into our game against the Cats in two weeks time."

The Exiles next play at Oxford Road on the 20th May, full details can be found at
