Exiles triumph in the Battle of Kent

The Juniors second contest of the season saw a fierce rivalry game, in which the young Exiles took on in-county rivals, the East Kent Mavericks. The game kicked off with high tensions, as the Exiles defense took to the field first, forcing a turnover on downs. It was now the Offense’s turn, but a fumble on third down put the Mavericks in great field position. The defense saved the day however, with strong tackling from Eoin Hunt, Olly Gadd and Bryn Cotter, forcing the ball back to the offense. The offense made the most of their second chance, as QB James Cook found WR Connor Hassan deep down the sideline for an 80 yard touchdown. RB Prince Wynter powered his way into the endzone on the PAT. Exiles 8 – 0 Mavericks. The defense continued to take the field in a dominant fashion for the rest of the second half, as defensive linemen Savior Onuorah, Harry Costin and Hamish Elliott prevented any chance of East Kent answering the Exiles score. With 10 seconds left in the half, and on 4th down, the Exiles offense saw themselves in great field position, and an opportunity to go 2 scores up at the half. This opportunity wasn’t missed, as Cook once again found the speedster Hassan in the endzone for another score. Hassan also added the extra points, leaving the score at 16-0. However, a lapse in concentration came at exactly the wrong time, as the Mavericks returned the following kickoff all the way for a score heading into halftime. A great tackle from Tom Lee prevented the extra points. Score at halftime: Exiles 16-6 Mavericks.

The Exiles defense and special teams were determined not to see any more Mavericks points in the second half. Shutdown coverage from DB’s Gareth Norman, Sam Adams, Euan Johnston, Liam Riley and rookie Rael Green-Thompson stopped any hope of an East Kent completion. This gave the offense all the time they needed, as great running from Franco Di Nola and Prince Wynter saw the Exiles move up and down the field. However, struggles in the redzone saw no extra points scored. This all changed however, as great kick returning from Regan Alexis put the offense in perfect position to put the game away. Completions to Yani Ourabah and great blocking from rookie Chris Harvey aided in the offense moving closer to victory. One final deep throw to WR Connor Hassan gave him a hat trick on the day, and the resulting score was the final dagger. The extra points were added by QB James Cook, and the victory was sealed. Final score: Exiles 24-6 Mavericks. The battle of Kent trophy returns home to the Beaverwood Club, and yet another Exiles victory is in the books. The Juniors next game will be at the Beaverwood Club on the 12th June against the London Warriors.
