Exiles suffer first defeat of the season

The Kent Exiles suffered their first defeat of the season as they fell to the Bury Saints 41-21 at The Beaverwood Club.

Both teams came into the game undefeated after both gaining promotion last year but the Saints prevailed in the clash to take sole possession of the top spot in the division.

The Exiles started the game the strongest however forcing Bury to punt and then marching down the field to score a touchdown with Dan Exell finishing off the 9-play 73-yard touchdown drive with a short run. Unfortunately the extra point attempt was blocked and the host’s lead was short lived when the Saints marched down the field to score their own touchdown and an extra point to take a slender 7-6 lead.

It did not take Kent’s offense long to regain the lead however as a big 27-yard completion to Alex Clifford set up a 22-yard field goal for Ash Faiers to give the Exiles a two point lead.

However from that point the Saints offense had a huge level of control scoring three touchdowns without reply for the remainder of the first half with the hosts offense faltering and their usually stout defence having trouble keeping up with the quality of the visitors.

The Exiles came back into the game slightly in the third quarter as Gabriel Quartey picked up over 40 yards on the ground in a single drive including a 15-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-15.

Bury, however, did well to halt the comeback as they responded with another touchdown to once again extend the lead. Kent did score another touchdown, again through tough running by Quartey but Bury saw the game out by scoring another touchdown making the final score 41-21.

Quartey was among the stand out players on offense, racking up 143 yards in addition to his two touchdowns, Exell, added 39 yards and a touchdown with George Eghator supplying 34 yards. Zac Ritchie had 107 yards through the air with Ben Griffin racking up 5 catches for 62 yards.

The Exiles will be disappointed to have surrendered their 100% record but will look to the positives in the game and look to rebound with a visit to Colchester next week, a team that they have already beaten this season.
