Solent unable to thrash the Exiles!

The Kent Exiles survived a second half fight-back to beat the Solent Thrashers 39-24 at the Beaverwood Club on Sunday and strengthen their position in the race toward the playoffs.

The hosts raced out to a 33-0 1st half lead against a severely short-handed Thrashers side but the visitors rallied in the second half to turn the game into a real contest.

Kent started the game strongly on both sides of the ball with Jay Henderson claiming an interception on the Thrashers opening drive of the game. The Exiles offense turned the positive field position into points almost immediately with Dan Exell running for 22 yards on three plays including a 7-yard touchdown score.

The Exiles stingy defence stood up to the Thrashers once again, forcing a three-and-out before recovering a bad snap on the resulting punt attempt to claim possession on the Thrashers’ own five yard line. The offense once again took almost instant advantage as George Eghator ran into the end zone to double the score at 12-0.

Kent continued their dominance on both sides of the ball throughout the first half with Joe Alexis recovering a fumble alongside his many tackles and Zac Ritchie throwing for a touchdown to James Bertram-Smith. Exell and Eghator added another touchdown apiece with both Nick Mayer and Richard Matkins notching interceptions in a dominant first half.

After the break, however, the Exiles were stunned when the Thrashers ran in a touchdown in the first play of the half from scrimmage and Solent added another two scores in the third quarter to bring the score to 33-18.

The Exiles responded in the fourth quarter when strong running from Dan Excell coupled with a big first down catch from Adam Lillis resulted in a touchdown pass from Ritchie to Adam Lillis.

Solent did add another score late in the fourth quarter but it would prove to not be enough as the Exiles’ dominant first half performance prevailed.

Next up for the Exiles is a home matchup against the Hertfordshire Cheetahs as they look to cement their position in a bid for postseason football.
