Tournament 3 – 19/01/2019 @Home
It was a cold and early start on Saturday as we hosted our home tournament of this season.
The opening game of the tournament put us up against the undefeated Wembley Stallions. It was to be our first ever outing against the Stallions and although we were to give it our all the game went the same way others had done against them this season. Their stalwart defence held us in check whilst their dominant running game was to prove almost unstoppable. Wembley finished the game by beating us convincingly 30-0.
A much needed break for us before our next game (to allow for the Stallions to play the Valkyries) gave us the opportunity to catch our breaths, warm up and prepare for our final regular season battle against Cardiff.
The see-saw battle saw Cardiff answer to each score that we put against them with one of their own preventing us from pulling away and establishing any comfortable lead. Our steady running game care of Sarah ‘Millsy’ Miller, with huge break away runs from Lauren ‘Bovril’ Drewett and passes by Vicki Hellard kept us in the lead whilst stout tackling from our Defence and especially by returning Exile Kirsty McIntyre halted Cardiff from moving in front. However, with time running out and our lead only six points Cardiff had a final opportunity to win the game. Their drive started well but a timely interception by Kirsty was to end it and allow us to knee out the final seconds of the game and take the win 27-21.
The two hard fought contests (a loss and a win) have given us a 3-3 overall record and elevated us into second position in Division 2 South. We now have a few weeks to prepare for the last tournament of the season and with the Finals in our sights we still have everything to play for.
